The name 'annual' come from the Latin annus, meaning 'year'. And that's how long these plants take to grow from seed, flower, do the bees and butterfly thing, make more seed, and die.
You can select from two types of annual herbs: hardy annuals and half hardy annuals.
The hardy annuals such as nasturtium can withstand the cold. So you can sow them outdoors in spring or autumn.
The half-hardy annuals such as basil will die if you expose them to the cold. The first autumn frost usually marks the end of their life. Even if they haven't completed their life cycle yet.
